The Memory of Paine.—”A select party of gentlemen; favorable to the indulgence and expression of freedom of sentiment,” celebrated “the 92d anniversary of this distinguished” individual, at the National Hotel on the 29th ult. “An appropriate discourse was delivered, and succeeded by a variety of sentiments and songs suitable to the occasion: among which were the following!“
“VOLNEY, CONDORCET [with permission, we will add Voltaire, Hume, Rosseau, Paine] and their associate sages. The pure morality of their writings, strict integrity of their characters, and active benevolence of their lives, incontestibly prove” [that men’s prejudices sometimes run away with their reason; and that it has been truly observed that there is but one step from the sublime to the ridiculous.
