Grave of Thomas Ollive and his sister Elizabeth Paine, Thomas Paine’s second wife, who were married in March 1771. Eventually, Paine was forced into bankruptcy in 1774 and Elizabeth and Paine separated in June partly due to Paine’s long absences stemming from his work as an exciseman. Holt was a strong opponent of the slave trade and gave extensive and prominent coverage to parliamentary debates about it. Notice was also taken of the activities of radical organisations, among them a commemorative celebration held in London by the Revolution Society.
