Christopher Hitchens And Thomas Paine

Thomas Paine Society UK, TPUK 2012 Number 3 Volume 11

Hitchens was a man of many unresolved contradictions. How anyone could find Mrs Thatcher sexy is beyond me. And there are far better examples of the distillers’ art than Walker’s Black Label. But if his writing about Paine encourages people to read Paine’s works he will have earned his redemption.

Paine Departs From England For The Last Time

Thomas Paine Society UK, TPUK 2010 Number 3 Volume 10

We thank Paul Myles for the transcript of this important letter, now in the British Library, from the government agent J. Mason, to J.B. Surges. an under secretary for foreign affairs, which demolishes the constantly repeated mantra of Paine having fled the country to escape arrest.

Thomas Paine – A Collection of Unknown Writings

By Kenneth. W. Am I being harsh? Well I certainly hope that I’m not being the only one finding errors in Mr. O’Brien’s little piece. If so I’m sure to be tarred and feathered very soon; the Christians are so very “open minded” about every man having the right to his own opinion.

BOOK REVIEW: Thomas Paine: The Case Of The King Of England And His Officers Of Excise

Thomas Paine Society UK, TPUK 1998 Number 4 Volume 3

This short essay is unquestionably a major contribution to Paine studies, though likely on the controversial side in that it casts Paine in a role few of his admirers would have thought possible, for it is the belief of the author that Paine was ‘an undercover agent’ for George III.

BOOK REVIEW: Tom Paine, A Political Life

Thomas Paine Society UK, TPUK 1995 Number 4 Volume 2

This is unquestionably an excellent biography of the great radical, but it is far from being the definitive biography. In fact I do not think the author had in mind writing such a biography, rather it is, as its name indicates, a book which lays emphasis on Paine’s political ideas and influence.

A Bibliography Of Writings On Thomas Paine, 1975-1993

Thomas Paine Society UK, TPUK 1994 Number 3 Volume 2

In compiling a bibliography of writings on Paine, one is confronted with the problem of not where to begin, but where to stop. The words of John Adams remain true: “I know not whether any Man in the World has more influence on its inhabitants or affairs…than Tom Paine.”
